The Night a Camaro Changed My Career

Amaan Mulla
I wasn’t supposed to meet him that night.
There was no plan, no networking event, no LinkedIn message. Just hunger, boredom, and two electric scooters.
It was winter break. Around 35°F.
Cold enough to stay in but not cold enough to ignore midnight cravings.
So my friend and I did what made zero sense at the time.
We layered up, stepped out into the freezing night, and rode our e scooters to Raising Cane's.
Warm food. Good conversation.
For a moment, the cold didn’t exist.
Until we had to leave.
The Moment Everything Changed
Stepping outside felt like stepping into a wall of ice.
We just stood there for a bit, mentally preparing for the ride back.
And then we heard it.
A loud engine.
A Chevrolet Camaro SS pulled up nearby.
I have always been that person, the one who turns their head when a car like that passes.
So I looked.
And unexpectedly, he looked back.
A Conversation That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen
Instead of driving off, he pulled up to us.
He looked at our scooters, smiled, and asked the most predictable question.
“How fast does that thing go?”
And just like that, a completely random conversation started.
We talked about what we were studying.
We told him we were designers.
He told us about his businesses, including a nootropic brand called Philosopher’s Fuel.
What started as small talk turned into something more real.
We exchanged contacts and set up a meeting.
At that point, we still had no idea what this would become.
From a Parking Lot to Possibility
When we met again, things got serious.
We walked him through everything.
Our work back in India, our projects, our impact.
We even presented a full deck, our story, our approach, our thinking.
He did not just listen.
He understood.
We could not work with him yet because we were still students.
But instead of that being the end of the conversation, it became the beginning of something bigger.
We talked about vision.
About long term plans.
About where we could fit in the future.
He told us he would want to work with us after graduation.
More Than an Opportunity
What followed was not just keeping in touch.
He became a mentor.
A guide.
Someone who genuinely invested in our journey.
Through the ups and downs of our final year, he stayed connected.
Checking in, advising, supporting.
No expectations. Just belief.
The Full Circle Moment
Graduation day.
A day that already meant everything.
But somehow, it got even better.
He showed up.
Early.
With job offers in his hand.
That was his graduation gift to us.
What This Story Really Means
This was not just luck.
It was being open to conversations.
It was showing up with confidence.
It was taking small moments seriously.
It was being ready when opportunity appears.
That night did not look important when it started.
But it changed everything.
Final Thought
People say America is a land of opportunity.
I believe that, but not in the obvious way.
Opportunities do not always come through applications or interviews.
Sometimes, they pull up next to you in a parking lot while you are freezing after eating chicken tenders.
You just have to be ready to talk.
What This Says About Me
"I build connections naturally, not transactionally."
"I take initiative in unexpected situations."
"I present my work with clarity and confidence."
"I value relationships, not just opportunities."
