The Daily Wildcat

The Daily Wildcat is the University of Arizona’s independent, student-run newspaper, publishing since 1899. Beyond daily news and digital media, the Daily Wildcat produces special magazine editions that capture the culture, stories, and voices of campus life.

Lead Designer at Daily Wildcat

“Where storytelling meets design, from polished editorial spreads to playful student newspapers, bringing campus and community voices to life.”

As a Graphic Designer, I contributed to two major editorial projects: The Fall 2024 Magazine, a polished long-form publication. Tucson WTF! (Where’s The Fun), a playful student guide to food, music, and culture.

The Challenge

We were to create a professional, cohesive design system that elevated student journalism into a polished, editorial experience. The Wildcat Welcome Fall Magazine 2024-25 delivered a refined, modern publication that enhanced readability and strengthened the Wildcat’s editorial identity.

Research & Inspiration – Looked at editorial benchmarks like WIRED, Kinfolk, The New Yorker for structure and hierarchy.

  • Grids & Systems – Built adaptable grids for long-form magazine stories and playful, modular layouts for WTF!.

  • Typography – Balanced serif fonts for readability with bold sans-serif headers for energy.

  • Visual Language – Established palettes, iconography, and layout treatments to separate serious editorial tone (Magazine) from fun, student-first tone (WTF!).

  • Collaboration – Worked under tight deadlines with editors, photographers, and staff to finalize both projects for print circulation.

Tucson WTF!

The newspaper produced a vibrant, student-favorite issue that doubled as a cultural guide for food, music, and events in Tucson.

“Designing for the Daily Wildcat taught me how to flex between two worlds creating order and polish for long-form editorial content, while also embracing bold, playful design for student-driven cultural stories. Both projects reflect my belief that design is storytelling, no matter the format.”
